MEDEL TICI UNICO

You may – or may not – have heard that MEDEL have launched (in October 2026) a new implant and processor called TICI UNICO.  TICI is their Totally Implantable Cochlear Implant.  With this CI system, there is no external processor, microphone, battery or coil – everything is under the skin.

Patients are asking about it, but please note that it is not yet available on the NHS. At the time of this post (October 2026), USAIS is not implanting this device.

Here is what MEDEL say about it:

TICI UNICO is the first hearing solution of its kind. It helps people with severe-to-profound hearing loss understand sound, just like a classic cochlear implant. But everything, including the microphone, is implanted under the skin.

How Hearing Works With an Invisible Cochlear Implant

  1. TICI picks up sounds through the skin and converts them to electrical pulses.
  2. These electrical pulses stimulate the inner ear (cochlea), bypassing the non-functioning hair cells.
  3. The auditory nerve carries these signals to the brain.
