USAIS Appointments
The number of appointments hosted by USAIS increased to over 9,000 during the period from 1st April 2023 to 31st March 2024. Hannah Turner is our in-house BSL interpreter and she attended the majority of those appointments that required this support. Sometimes, we need to book and pay for BSL and Language interpreters to support the patients who need this.

Visual communication and reading development research
Reading research has traditionally focused on mappings between auditory representations of spoken language and written words. However, this is a limited view of language. Visual spoken language input (visual speech/ lipreading), sign language and fingerspelling are increasingly recognised as important to reading development in deaf children.

Sign Language App for South West Trains
An app immediately translating train announcements into British Sign Language has been launched.
South Western Railway is trialling Signapse, which uses AI generated images to deliver information to deaf passengers.
The trial is currently running on services between Basingstoke, London, Salisbury and Exeter, with hopes to extend the initiative.
Developers hope the app will make train journeys less stressful and plans to introduce the app in all public places.
