Research – spectral peak picking improves tactile speech perception
We’re pleased to share a newly published article by MTID, Auditory Implant Service, and ISVR researchers Dr Mark Fletcher and Professor Carl Verschuur
📄 Fletcher et al. (2025) Spectral peak picking improves tactile speech perception, Nature Scientific Reports.
The paper reports a new method for increasing the transfer of speech information delivered via haptic stimulation in a wrist-worn haptic hearing aid, with the aim of enhancing speech perception for people with hearing loss.
This work builds on growing evidence from our team and others that haptic hearing aids could provide meaningful benefits for cochlear implant users, as well as for people in low-resource settings who are unable to access cochlear implant technology.
