BCIG provides Safety Information for Cochlear Implant Users

Did you know that Cochlear Implant Users have a magnet inside their head?  The magnet is part of the equipment that helps CI users to hear.  These magnets will sometimes interact with other equipment containing magnets and electronics.  Some of the equipment that contains or uses magnets and electronics are:

  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanners
  • Van der Graf generators (sometimes used in educational establishments)
  • Induction Hobs
  • Children’s toys
  • TENS machines
  • Electrolysis equipment

YOU MUST ALWAYS CHECK WITH YOUR COCHLEAR IMPLANT CENTRE IF YOU NEED AN MRI SCAN.  NOT EVERYONE CAN HAVE A SCAN SAFELY.

Have you ever wondered whether scuba diving or fairground rides are safe for CI Users?

The British Cochlear Implant Group (BCIG) has worked with CI manufacturers to provide answers to these questions on Cochlear Safety Information Sheets.  These information sheets are provided to patients by their Centre when they decide to have a Cochlear Implant, but the BCIG regularly updates the Safety Information on their website.

If you want to look up the information, you can do so at any time, on the BCIG website, a link to which is provided below:
